To find your leaf, we search through piles of carefully stored leaves using your "yes" or "no" answers to a series of questions, your unique thumbprint, and other criteria to guide us. Once found, we transcribe the Siddha’s ancient Tamil words into a notebook that is then translated into English. Undoubtedly, nadi astrology is the most amazing astrology tool gifted to us by our great rishis, but we need to use it while living up to their expectations about our calibre to understand and respect the law of karma and without succumbing to fatalistic ideology. Nadi scripts are written on palm leaves in vattezhuthu (an ancient Tamil script) and are widely used in Tamilnadu's Vaitheeswaran Kovil. These scripts are said to be passed down from generation to generation. It is believed that, if only your destiny allows it, you will seek out your nadi and go in search for it.
Agasthiyar Maharishi, the senior of the 18 siddhas, conducted research on human life and predicted their birth based on their karmic debt with the identification of their thumb impression like top, middle, and bottom lines, by which they will have a life of high or low class, and by performing certain remedies, they can change their sufferings and fulfil their needs as per the leaf.
The origin of the Naadi inscriptions can be traced back to approximately 5000 years ago. The ancient Indian sapta picu and its 18 sidhas are said to have written each person's life patterns on palm leaves using their yogic intuitive powers and Lord Shiva's blessing. These unique leaves were initially kept in the Saraswathi Mahal Library of Tanjore, the capital of Tamil Nadu, in India.
Later, during British rule, the British sold these leaves. The person who knows their value and importance is very interested in gathering them. They were members of the Valluvar community of south India, who specialised in astrology and kept it all safe in Vaidheeswaran kovil, a location near Chennai, the capital of Tamilnadu, an Indian state.
The primary centre for Naadi Shastra is in Vaidheeswaran kovil, near Chidambaram, about 250 kilometres from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a state in south India. Here, Lord Shiva is said to have assumed the role of a vaidhya, or doctor, who alleviated the miseries of his devotees.
The palm leaf inscription of an individual is spotted by his thumb impression. The maharishis kept 108 names for the impression and divided them into top, middle, and low lines; those who have a birth will live a life in high, middle, or low class, according to the impression. And to live a prosperous life by resolving their karmic debt through certain remedies written on their palm leaves,The naadi readers identify the particular types of lines on the thumb impression, and the corresponding set of palm leafs is taken. The time required to pick up your leaf depends upon the identification of the thumb impression. Some impressions are identified easily, and the corresponding leaves are found soon.
Leafs are there not only for Indian nationals but also for foreigners and other nationals belonging to other religions and creeds. Destiny has reading leaves for those who want them.It is also stated that about 60% of the people in the world are only likely to get these results if they are available. The other leaves might have been damaged or lost in the course of life.
The famous palm leaf and thumbprint system is one of the many branches of Nadi Shastra made popular in south India. The principle is very simple. Destiny is one. The life that you are going to live is going to be one of them. Thus, there must exist a direct correlation between all the indicators of destiny. Your thumb, your palm, the vaastu of your house, your face, even the order in which you arrange your bed, must all reflect your destiny equally well.
The seeker gets an appointment for a particular day and time. When called in, the seeker prays for the blessings of the Maharishi. For the exact leaf, 108 conches, or cowries, are thrown. For those who are not physically present and wish to seek the blessings of Maharishi, there is another method of arriving at the exact location. The person is asked to give any random number from 1 to 108. Based on that number, the reader will reach for the leaf and start narrating the material pertaining to the question or query. Atri Maharishi once suggested this method to get him from far-off places in the future in response to a specific question.
The seeker loudly narrates the questions or requests in his language. The reader understands it with the help of the translator, if needed. The reading begins after turning the required number of palm leaves based on the number of cowries falling over in the overturned (heads down) position. After reading some sentences from the leaf, the reader starts narrating what Maharishi has to say on the posed question. The meaning is narrated in the required language. When the narration is over, the seeker could ask the next question, if needed. A maximum of five questions or points are answered in one session. The poetic yet simple narrations in the manuscripts are used to decipher the prediction. The narrations are precise and easy to understand. On many occasions, it is observed that the narrations are further elaborated by way of discussion between godly couples. Out of concern for the seeker, Mata - Mother - Anusuya on occasion elaborates on the question or persuades (removes) her spouse to provide the solution or remedy.
During these Jeevanadi sessions, the atmosphere gets supercharged with emotions. It changes in a jiffy. Laughter can lighten the mood and put a smile on the face of the person receiving the best compliments from Maharishi. When scolding appears in the reading for the mistakes made, the face becomes gloomy; tears flow for the regrettable plight; and when solutions to the grim future are found, the heart beats return to normal pace. On some occasions, Maharishi himself and his spouse get choked up with emotion. They beg the Almighty—Param Shiva—to save them from the deplorable state of his seeker. When Maharishi himself assures the seeker that he will begin penance on his behalf, the seeker is overjoyed. The heart fills with gratitude that, in times of difficulty, one is not alone. There is some great power to protect us (by guiding us to sincerely seek help in time). After the completion of the session, when everyone—the seeker along with the reader and translator—comes out of the room, everyone goes into an exhilarated state of mind for a long time.
This is only the outline of what happens inside the reading room. One has to witness it and experience it to get the divine blessings and guidance of spiritually enlightened souls. With the hands folded for prayers and the head bowed down with reverence, if one goes to seek blessings, why will he not get the best of the supreme divine?
A German author named Thomas Ritter has recently authored a book named "The Secret of Indian Palm Leaf Libraries."
In his book, on pages 81–85, Mr. Thomas Ritter describes his experiences at the many Nadi centres he visited in India and the results of the carbon-14 test conducted in the famous "Institute for Ion Radiation" of the Physics Department at the Nuclear Research Centre in Rossendorph, Saxen, Germany. This institute has been in charge of determining the age of ancient paintings and other documents of national importance in Germany, and Thomas Ritter contacted the institute's expert C-14 scientists, Prof. Fradrik and Dr. Hanse. He also confirmed with Tamil language experts in Germany that the issue is indeed the Tamil script. It is about predictions, not some religious matter.
On preliminary checking, the scientists said that the matter written on the leaf has been etched out and some graphite-like substance has been used so that the matter can be seen more clearly. Clearing the black substance from the leaf took some months. By then, Thomas Ritter had become increasingly anxious about the result. Sometime in March 1995, he got the much-awaited result, which clearly indicated that the age of that particular leaf was at least 350 years. Considering the deviation factor allowance generally given for this type of test, the report said the age could be between 350 and 400 years.
